Let me start by saying I really wanted to like this movie. Aside from Mary, the Mother of God, Mary Magdalene is perhaps one of the most controversial women of the bible. She has been constantly vilified and has endured character assassination throughout history. All of that is for another blog post.

I watched the trailer for this movie and thought, ‘Why not?’. Right off the bat I see they used CE for a date reference instead of AD. Strike one. Second strike is they cast Joaquin Phoenix to play Jesus. I do not object because of his life, I object because of his age which brings us to issue, or strike three (but not the last strike)- by casting a man 17 years older than Jesus was when he started His ministry is inappropriate. I am taking a guess here in saying I think they did this because of strike four -they portrayed Jesus as a frail man who is wiped out after every miracle He performs. The last strike I can report (I stopped watching after the Lazarus debacle) was when Lazarus sister looks at Jesus as if she has never seen Him before and asks Him, “You are the healer?”- part two of strike five is that they have Lazarus’ body lying on the open ground. Why are these things an issue?

  1. Jesus was good friends with Lazarus and his sisters. Jesus was heart broken His friend had died. For Lazarus’ sister to look at Jesus as a stranger is odd. Now perhaps the makers of the movie wanted her to be astonished that Jesus was THE Healer? Perhaps she was not addressing Him as a stranger but was confused that a Man she knew was THE HEALER? Either way this is incredibly inaccurate. Jesus spent time with Lazarus and His family. Jesus would have told them who he was. They would have been astonished at the miracle He performed but not at WHO He is. Scripture tells us in John 20:30-31 30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. This means there ARE some things that Jesus did that were not recorded but for those things which He did that Are recorded we need to portray them as accurately as possible.
  2. Lazarus was called out of his tomb by Jesus as a foretelling for what was going to happen to Jesus very soon. Having Lazarus lying on the bare ground would not have been a proper part of Jewish culture. Jesus did NOT lay down next to Lazarus to revive him from death. These are important aspects of Christianity for which there should be no creative license taken.
  3. Let us focus less on banging the feminist drum and just portray bible stories as accurate as possible.

I love Mary Magdalene and I pray others will study her more and drop the false claims made against her and see her for who she was, a devote follower of Christ, equal to the apostles!
