Depicting top to bottom; Anna the mother of Mary, Mary, the mother of Jesus, and of course, The Christ.
The above is one of my favorite icons. It shows what kind of legacy can be created by purity.
In the story of Anna and Joachim, Mary’s parents and Jesus’ grandparents, Anna and Joachim are barren. One day when Joachim, a righteous man, takes his offering to the temple, it is rejected by the priest. The reason the priest gives is because children are a blessing from God. If people do not have any children, they must have sinned against God or else… children!
The priest tells Joachim to come back when he is ready to fess up and reveal the sin he committed to have God refuse to give he and his wife children. Since Joachim IS a righteous man, he goes into the desert to pray. Anna hears about this and she too prays. She stays home and walks out into her garden to pray and seek the Lord. she sees all of the animals, the birds, and even the fish have offspring while she remains barren. Additionally, she and Joachim are too old to have children! How will they prove to the priest they have not sinned? It’s not as if they can have children at their advanced age… or IS it?
Anna prays to God and promises to dedicate to Him any child they are given, male or female. After 40 days, Joachim comes home from praying in the desert. He and Anna talk things over and come together not out of lust, but in obedience. They have prayed, they have fasted. As a result of their purity and obedience, they conceived– as God promised them. Their child is born… Mary! I do believe she is the only female child born from such a situation. Hanna bore Samuel, Sarah– Israel, but Anna… Anna bore the mother of the King of the Universe!
Mary was NOT immaculately conceived! Joachim and Anna came together in the regular way.
Mary was no ordinary female. she was not JUST a female child born to two old people. She was special. her mother fed her special foods. Anna also made sure to keep the floor of her tent covered with rugs and pillows so that Mary’s feet never touched the earth.
Prior to my husband becoming Orthodox, and even a bit after, he had a hard time understanding this information. Due to the protestant habit of understating Mary out of fear of Mary worship, they just do not venture into her story much if at all. I think it is immensely important to know one’s history/ancestry, especially religious/spiritual history/ancestry.
There is so much curiosity these days about our worldly history. Let’s study and understand our spiritual history too!
Back to my husband. He kept trying to tell me that ANY girl could have born the Christ. There was nothing special about Mary that made God choose her! What?! God carefully orchestrated EVERYTHING on hearth down to the girl how could be the Queen of Heaven, the God bearer, the Theotokos!
From her own conception by her parents to the Spirit of God coming over her and her quiet, bloodless delivery of Jesus, there is nothing ordinary or impure about the mother of God.
There is a reason for Mary being pure and yet NOT having been immaculately conceived. The message is SO clear it is almost embarrassing that entire false doctrines have been made up to cover it and other Christians have tried to ignore her altogether.
We have been told, nay brainwashed, into believing true power lies in sin and that trying to be pure is impossible or worse, a legalistic ‘work’ to be cast aside as unobtainable by we the dirty, huddled masses. this is a lie from the pit of hell. Yes, it is difficult. Difficult does not mean an impossible, unachievable, lost cause.
Even if you have led a VERY impure life up until now, you can still course correct and finish well.
To help you understand ‘finishing well’… here are 100 bible verses about it from one of my favorite resources; openbible.info

Bottom line? this is YOUR life to live. If you are exhausted from how you have been living there is nothing wrong with reworking things to your favor. By which I mean toward your eternal salvation not eternal damnation. Do not allow friends, family, or strangers to determine where you will spend eternity.
